The tall spires of Lupines are an early-summer border classic. Plants grow best in a deep, rich soil, slightly on the acidic side. This British hybrid produces midsized stems with spikes of bicolor blooms in a combination of bright magenta-purple with an orange fleck. Prune back to 6 inches after blooming, to rejuvenate the foliage. As Lupines are not particularly long lived, plan to add in new plants every couple of years. Be on the lookout for aphid infestations just around blooming time and control with an organic insecticide. Powdery mildew is sometimes also a problem. Bred and introduced by Westcountry Nurseries in Devon, UK.
