The hardy Ice Plants are native to South Africa but are amazingly hardy in North America, provided they are grown in the sun in very well-drained soil. This forms a low carpet or mat of succulent, green leaves bearing loads of starry flowers with petals that are orange with a magenta ring and yellow centre. A great choice for hot, dry areas and excellent in the rock garden or wall and for edging the front of a border. Attractive to butterflies. Drought tolerant once established. Where winter drainage is poor, consider growing this as a summer blooming annual.
